The Hype has Returned

I'm noticing something very intriguing all across the internet.

Where do you see any articles talking negatively about the sequel? This used to be a consistent thing. It's popular to hate Avatar, or at least think lowly of it. At least, it was. We all saw it. We all continuously were bombarded by the relentless waves of people who compared to Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, Ferngully, Thundercats, The Smurfs, and others. This was the way it was for more than a decade.

Now, after the trailer's release, these are the kinds of articles we're seeing:

People.com
Avatar: The Way of Water Trailer Attracts Massive 148.6 Million Views In Single Day: Report

CNN.com:
The 'Avatar: Way of Water' trailer teases new creatures and aquatic action

Military.com
A Wounded Warrior Returns in 'Avatar: The Way of Water'
(remember when the military claimed Avatar was anti-military?)

The Gamer:
Avatar 2 Can Save Us From Marvel Mediocrity

Avatar: The Way of Water Might Have the Best Trailer of All Time

^This last article, by the way, is written by someone who literally never cared before about Avatar until watching the trailer for the more recent film.

These articles listed are all from article lists on feeds, not from pro-avatar sources. Literally: do a Google search of "Avatar: The Way of Water", and 95% of the articles will either be praising Avatar (both the first film and this trailer of the second), or talking about easter eggs and trailer breakdowns. Close to no one is speaking negatively about Avatar.

The truth is, this time Avatar will attract the attention of everyone in the world. Haven't you noticed that people are fed up with watching violence in movies and want something different, escape to another world?

I think there might be a perfect storm of sorts, at first alot of people complained about the wait being too long and the MCU taking over, but now the MCU is old and everywhere, we just had a Pandemic, and now the ugliness of human war is at the forefront again and people are ready to get out and now Pandora is fresh again, it's different, it's spectacular and a well fleshed out vision for the public to escape to, I have good feeling for December!

Marvel movies have become too common, so they no longer evoke the same emotions as at the beginning. And some movies were just plain fun, along with lame special effects, like Aquaman (2018) for example. The Avatar(2009) showed how to use special effects so that they are practically invisible.

It is nice seeing some positivity towards the franchise. Anything will have haters but as you alluded to, there is a huge influx of positivity towards The Way of Water, more than I expected from the general public. Exciting times indeed!

From the People.com article saying 149M views in the first day, this denotes anticipation and/or curiosity. What it does not represent is a meh reaction, which is great news for the movie release.

Also I'm curious to see what kind of BO numbers will the first one makes once returning in theaters in September, and what version will be presented (Original theater cut, the slightly longer cut of the second release or the extended Blu-Ray cut). I doubt it will be the latter but I'd love to see all those extra scenes in theater in 3D.

I would caution about approaching these sort of things with too much tribalism. I read the Guardian article as well when it came out, and while I don't agree with it at all from a personal standpoint, his point is also largely subjective.

Besides somewhat misunderstanding the purpose of a teaser trailer, his argument really is that what he personally would like to see in Avatar 2 wasn't something he saw in the trailer - that really says more about his own tastes than the movie but there's nothing wrong with that. Journalism is, after all, inherently subjective!

I think that rather than look at articles like that and go "What a terrible article", it's a lot more constructive to simply recognize that tastes differ and it's perfectly fine for people not to like Avatar. And, as Woodsprite pointed out in his original post, there's so much positivity going around that it's far easier to focus on that! :)

I wouldn't care so much about reviews, because most people don't read them anyway. And secondly, for so many years everyone in the world has already learned what Avatar is. Now, when the advertising campaign starts, those who watched but have forgotten for so many years will suddenly remember and 95% will go to the premiere of the second part. Perhaps before the end of the year, the war will also end, so the film may perfectly fit the mood that will prevail after Ukraine's victory.

I'd argue as well that as far as entertainment-based articles go, they're basically all opinion pieces and not actually journalism in the strict sense. But then, most journalism these days is quite bad when it comes to using adjectives to describe people/situations (shouldn't be allowed), using the word "I" or any related modifiers (shouldn't be allowed), etc.

Many things in journalism today was not allowed prior to the year 2000 in most major outlets, so just being aware of that as well.

there are way too many critics out there who never read the books, watch the tv shows/movies, they are supposed to be reviewing and providing an intelligent and thoughtful critical analysis of. they just skim a bunch of social media posts, entertainment articles, and hysteria generated by entrenched industry schmucks and trolls, and come up with own narrative and agenda of whatever is currently trending. disgusting.

I am really looking forward to the new Avatar movies.
l don't care what the critics say, l would reply to them, "show me the better film that you made, before you criticise someone else's efforts"
