Movies, other media, or real life referenced in the Way of Water

I searched for a thread like this, but couldn't find it, so I created this one.
Inspired by the thread about an Aliens Easter Egg that reminds of Avatar as started by ahoragi (https://tree-of-souls.net/threads/aliens-easter-egg-for-avatar.6212/), I would be interested in any references or homages that you noticed in the Way of Water or what you think about any of these which are posted in this thread. I would like to make it visual (a screenshot from TWOW and one from the other medium)

I have a whole series in mind where pretty much all previous Cameron movies are referenced to, but I shall start with one from a non-Cameron movie, namely Alien 3.
When I saw the shots of Polyphemus eclipsing Alpha Centauri A in TWOW, it kind of gave me an ominous vibe and I think every time it was shown something bad or intense was about to happen. And I felt like I had seen it before. Then later I realized a comparable shot in the movie Alien 3 used to give me that same ominous vibe.

In Avatar the Way of Water, Polyphemus eclipsing Alpha Centauri A:

In Alien 3, Fiorina Fury 161 eclipsing its star:

Of course, other than having at one time hosted a character played by Sigourney Weaver, Pandora and Fiorina 161 pretty much have nothing in common, with Fiorina 161 potentially being the filthiest and bleakest planet ever to have been committed to celluloid.

Maybe the reference wasn't intentional, but that isn't the point of the thread. I would be interested to see what references you found in the Way of Water.

Nice finds. Although I had both Titanic and The Abyss in mind already, I had not even thought about the handcuff scene in Titanic :)

Let's go all the way back to 1981 to James Cameron's "the finest flying piranha movie ever made" aka Piranha II: The Spawning. I hope I will not ruin TWOW with this one...

At the risk of posting a real life reference which I might be the only one on this forum to recognize, let me give some background first. For ten years I have worked in my professional life with 3D CAD design. In this world it is common practice to operate the design software with a regular computer mouse in the right hand (right-handed people) and a special 3D navigation device in the left hand. So one navigates the 3D space with the left hand and operates the functions, such as creating shapes, with the right hand.

For over ten years, the device(s) that we have been using have been some variant of the 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator, as seen below:

With the blue LED light emanating from between the hockey-puck-like navigation knob and the base of the device, it certainly looked futuristic to me when I first saw it, but I have grown used to it by now.

Clearly, James Cameron thought it looked futuristic as well:

I found it completely by chance as I was randomly skipping through the movie looking for something unrelated. But since it is so recognizable to me, it was hard to miss when seeing the still frame of the movie.

Interestingly, the comparable crew console of Quaritch's old Dragon in the first movie has no such device there.

Exactly.:) That is pretty much the same device, just a different variation. I still use an older variant of the one you showed, as well as the smaller version I showed.
And I remember seeing it years ago in The Expanse, indeed. I think I have seen it in other movies/series as well, but unfortunately I can't remember which.

cool! It's almost like the good old Most Important Device In The Universe prop has somehow turned into a generic puck style trackball thingy :D
