More Na'vi-approved hobbies and activities?

Hey there,

what are your hobbies closest to nature (so, Na'vi approved :D)? How do you stay in contact with the actual world beyond grey concrete walls?
I want to try out some new activities, but I have observed that most are bound to locations, mostly indoors :/

I'll start with Mountainbiking. Never tried it, not as easy where I live (not so many mountain here) but definitely something I want to try out!

Hiking/Walking: This to me is the best way to connect with and immerse myself in nature. Take time to stop and soak in the beauty and intricacies of Gaia. It's magical. Even in the city you can reach out to the life around us at the beaches and cliffs or in the reserves / parks. It doesn't have to be full on 25km+ day hike through the rainforest. I'd argue that smaller, easier walks make it more likely we will take out time to actually fully immerse ourselves in the life around us rather than get hung up on proving or challenging ourselves.

Gardening: If you have a decent yard, get your hands dirty. Gaia may spoil us crazy with this world, but few things in life are as satisfying and right as getting your hands dirty and repaying some of her love by nurturing some new life ourselves. I love my yard, despite the vagrancies of La Niña and the fact that right now it is very much a work in progress. I think any gardening effort is always rewarded and appreciated, but for me, nurturing and immersing myself in native species is incredibly rewarding, and is a major change in my older thinking that bringing together species from around the world was fun and interesting...

Diving/Snorkelling: Compared to the land, it's relatively easy to escape the human delusions of grandeur underwater and literally immerse yourself in the real world. And damn is it a beautiful and bizzare world down there. Snorkelling as kid was my first real escape from human hubris and it's stuck with my throughout my life, even in darker times. Scuba can seem like a very artificial and mechanical exercise, and to be fair, on the surface it 100% feels like that.... but the minute you drop into the ocean, it vanishes along with the weight, and you can just loose yourself in the reef. I always keep a minimalistic approach to diving ("technical" diving has never appealed to me) and treat it more like underwater hiking than a technical sport. It's just a means to let me linger on the reef and take in the diversity and richness of life down there. Freediving would almost certainly be the way to go for those younger and stronger than me.

Crafting: Wood, stone and shell working are certainly good ways to connect - and damn satisfying for sure.... not that'd I'd know to be honest because I'm not very good at it! But it's certainly something I'd love to be able to do and can see it giving a very strong connection. I am still working on my songcord though :)

Good point! I know a very skilled free diver, he always barely uses half as much air as I do, sometimes even closer to 1/3rd (when doing "technical diving", so with tanks). I remember your photos, photography makes us look closer than others, right?

Interesting, I never considered that. I should give it a try sometime. (Do you mean the songcord from The Way Of Water?)

I go snorkelling a lot, but when diving, I do scuba with tanks, because I love to linger and am definitely not young and strong enough to pull off a 10 minute breath hold :D - But yeah, here "technical diving" usually means with rebreathers, drysuits and all that stuff. Regular scuba is usually called "recreational diving", with stuff like nitrox and and decompression diving on open circuit being a sort of transitional area that blurs the boundaries. I like to keep it strictly recreational setup though - I don't want to have to worry about rebreathers or stage gasses or any of that stuff - I want my Port Jackson sharks, weird sponges and seals playing around, please :)

Yep! I've never been much good at very intricate things like this, but the songcord concept just really hit me. As I've never been good at keeping a journal yet like the idea of little memory joggers, it really called out as something I'd like to do. It's a beautiful concept that I keep coming back to, and as I do love and often collect bits of stone, sticks, leaf or shell from places that make an impact on me it seems fitting to work them into something to shape memories and thoughts.

This is going to be very niche, but me and my family went to an indoor water park this winter (I live in Canada with lots of snow) and it felts sooo good! The water helps me connect with nature. I have a very deep connexion to it :)
Here's a picture of the place i went in the evening, it was magical
It's funny you should say that, as my mum thought I was feeling a bit homesick and took me to an indoor rainforest garden over the easter weekend. It was absolutely stunning work and was possibly the only indoor place I've been that got anywhere close to feeling so... right. I can't remember the last time I saw humans achieve something so beautiful and so worthwhile.

Oh, interesting. I've only know Nitrox etc. as technical diving, but it's just a literal translation.

You have....PLAYING SEALS??!!! 🥹 🥺

Got the "feel" of Pandora yesterday evening. Ok, this is not an outdoor idea, but for people that can't really leave the house:
-Bath
-Put stuff in it that makes the water smell like the ocean
-Bubbles if you want
-Music that reminds you of Avatar
-Blue light (i used my rgb light bulb, but i want to try using my galaxy lamp next time, it's going to be even better!)
-Relax and enjoy

The more palms I see, the more I want to have them in my garden :D
Really beautiful indeed. I just remember a trip to a zoo ( :( ) with my math-class which also had an indoor garden. Idk why, but the memory gives me such a relaxed vibe because I have rarely been in such a dense forest.

I get that - they are lovely and definitely evoke a feeling of comfort for me. I remember going to the beach when I was a kid and there was a row of massive old phoenix palms there, and I lay in their shade, watching the lorikeets being in heaven, getting nesting and insects to eat from under the crowns, and perching in the gaps in the trunk. Lovely memory :)
