Hi - greetings from a long time Avatar fan with a renewed interest.

Hi! My name is Taka, and my pronouns are he/him. I remember seeing the 1st one as a child, and I loved it, but I think I missed the gravitas of it considering how young I was. But darn... Between seeing The Way Of Water, and reading some books on Zen and living in the moment, it's created this sort of confluence and desire for growth and improvement in myself. So I cut out social media, started hiking again and just listening and seeing the world truly, not with impassivity, and it's helped so much. But a big part of that is joining here. I lurk/post on forum sites and have visited here in the past, but I intend to stay this time. No more reddit, twitter, or other big social media platforms or conglomerates. These places are the best and I look forward to chatting with y'all. :hi:

Agreed. The typical social media sites are from hell. I hate them.
Interesting to see your excitement followed by the movie. I personally felt a bit down. The movie just once again showed me the absolute irrelevance of most modern desires.

Welcome, Takabrotaka! :hi: I had some of those same desires for growth after the first movie came out, and I've always try to keep that flame alive as much as it needs to be since then. Hanging around here helps with that. :) Mind if I ask what books you've read thus far?

The main one was Ichigo Ichie by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia! Aside from that mostly wikidiving into things like traditional kayaking, and reading things about traditional wayfaring and navigation across the world. But the Ichigo Ichie book talks about doing things to make more memorable moments in your life and focusing on the present rather than the past or future. And yeah, Fake Sully. I know my interest had waned in the years since the first one, and I was very skeptical of The Way Of Water until I thought "Why not" and watched it for myself. Since then I've read the original Project 880 script, countless fanfics, etc. I love the Metkayina so much, both for their inspiration and culture as well as the authenticity actors like Cliff Curtis brought to their roles.

Hi Taka,

I know how you feel about the main social media sites... I am on Reddit a bit myself, but find the discussion there is much more superficial and less thoughtful. I do live the independent forums like Tree of Souls, and it's nice to see this place getting some more activity again. Like yourself I did lurk here for a while. Sadly, after the first film I missed out on a lot of the community element, though it did have the unintended benefit of leaving me alone with my thoughts, which turned out well in the end, I feel :)

Welcome, friend! I went trough something similar. I was very young when the first movie came out. It did touch me, but because of the age, I was unable to fully experience it and understand it. Now with the second one I was literally changed as a person, I even got what people here call "PAD" or "Post Avatar Depression". But it was not only bad things, but good ones too. I am trying to make some changes in my life for good, and this forum and it's people are helping me a lot.

It is amazing how this movie has the power to change people for good, to make them see the world differently and improve their lives. It makes me happy to read this piece of your story and to see that you are doing great things for yourself!

I too hate them, I was able to quit some years ago and I will never go back. As you said, most modern desires are absolutely irrelevant and one of the things modern social media has is people trying to show us how "good" those desires are. Modern social media are full of emptiness, shallowness, futility and lies.

I don't know about you, but I literally get angry and sick when I hear that aweful noise of someone scrolling mindless trough tik tok feeds .

OOOOOOOOH yes, it's the worst noise I can imagine lol

Tbf most of my friends have most social media sites (some refuse TicToc though). They are not 100% bad, there are some decent memes here and there, but I deleted most of them so my best friends usually shows me hundred of good memes when we meet after a long time. So he's basically my middle man or filter :D
