Avatar - Adapt or Die (comic series )

I got this recently on Darkhorse digital, and I must say I'm pretty impressed. It's a lovely little self contained story, and I really enjoyed that we got to spend more time with Mo'at, and see more of her relationship with Eytukan, and her interactions with Grace and how she feels about the sky-people. Plus we get a few glimpses of young Neytiri, and it feels very right for her and her nature, and seeing a younger Mo'at you really can see how they are mother and daughter.

The artwork is OK. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's fine. I feel the artwork in Next Shadow is better. The digital comics direct from the Darkhorse website are *really* good value though, and I'll be getting the graphic novel version in print when that comes out.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend it. The artwork is a shame, but to be fair, bringing the full beauty and scale of Pandora to life on every single page would be delightful, but also an incredible effort. Given the resources DH have as a fairly small publisher, I feel they did well, and by focusing on a "smaller" story, they definitely did fine - and the story itself is lovely - I hope we get more of these, it's heartfelt, touching and on a personal ("human") scale :)

I have never been into comics nor graphic novels, to be honest, but it is because I have never found one that really got my attention. Now that I know there is Avatar comics, I will definitely look after it hahah Thanks for sharing, friend!

Definitely do. There's also The High Ground, which is canon (same as Next Shadow, Adapt or Die and Tsu'tey's Path) , but though it's meant to be the direct prequel to TWOW... I don't know, I'm not loving the concept**

But yep, Adapt or Die is a lovely story, and very in the spirit of the Avatar we love... there's no big "high concept" sci-fi... it's very personal scale and culturally rich, and I love it. I really really hope we see more of these sorts of stories.

Next Shadow is more drama, but it's still very much following the Omatikaya and is very interesting in that it explores the impact of colonial disruption/dislocation on indigenous culture and society, as well as the lasting trauma and scars that the conflicts which stem from that have.

**
It involves Na'vi going to space and a big fight in orbit, which to me is just ridiculous and totally missing the point of the Avatar universe

I think the same way you do, I also love personal scale stories, specially inside a universe like Avatar. To me it is now about the sci-fi stuff, but the culture, the planet itself, the people.
May I ask your help with these comics? I went to Dark Horse site and found that there is different volumes/editions of each story, for example, "Adapt or Die TPB" and "Adapt or Die #6". Than there is "The High Ground" divided by volumes. What does all of that means? I don't know what to buy hahah please, help me .

For Adapt or Die - there are six issues which make up the full story. The "TPB" is essentially all those issues collected together into one graphic novel. You can get either, but personally I went for the issues digitially, and will get the TPB version in print form for my birthday :)

High Ground is a set of three graphic novels (3 volumes). HC just means hardcover print version. Usually the hardcover versions have some extra content like concept art or some such but I don't know if they've done that for High Ground or not - I'd imagine so as Cameron was quite excited about it as the story in High Ground was originally a very early script Cameron was working on for the second movie.

Cool, thanks for that. I might get the digitals and save them, as I've got a long haul flight coming up and guess who's going economy class? Yep... could definitely use some escapism for those 24 hours of joy and relaxation.

When it comes to reading, I am more oldschool style, I prefer printed versions, but the digital ones we can read on the go... I don't know what to do hahah but I liked your idea of getting a printed version for birthday and going with the individual issues digitally, I think I will copy your idea :P!
I like Adapt or Die as well.

If you're getting into Avatar comics, The High Ground is really must-read. I believe it's also available through Darkhorse Digital.
I will definitely get it, friend! I just wish I had more time for myself to be able to fully enjoy all of this!
